What is the difference between ITE and ITI?

ITE places the insulation on the outside of the building, without reducing the living area. It completely eliminates thermal bridges and is the most efficient technique overall. ITI lays the insulation on the inside of the walls, which reduces the living area by 8 to 12 cm per wall and leaves thermal bridges in the slabs and walls. What's more, the Klimabonus is 25 % lower for ITI than for ITE. ITE is recommended whenever the architectural configuration and town planning regulations allow it.

What is the average price of an ITE in Luxembourg in 2026?

In Luxembourg in 2026, the price of ITE will vary between €130 and €300/m², including installation, depending on the technique chosen and the insulation material. ITE under rendering with rock wool is the least expensive (€130-210/m²), while ITE under ventilated cladding with a zinc or aluminium finish is the most expensive (€220-300/m²). For a house with a 120 m² façade, you should expect to pay between €15,600 and €36,000, before deducting Klimabonus and Enoprimes grants.

What Klimabonus can I obtain for ITE in Luxembourg?

In 2026, the Klimabonus for ITE will be €115/m² for ecological biosourced insulation (wood fibre, cork, hemp, sheep's wool) and mechanically fixed mineral wool (ventilated cladding). For bonded mineral wool, the amount is €60/m². Standard EPS has been excluded since 2024 (0 €/m²), and EPS with ≥ 50 % of recycled content is entitled to 75 €/m². These amounts are fixed lump sums per square metre of insulated façade, and can be combined with Enoprimes and VAT at 3 %.

Do I need planning permission for ITE in Luxembourg?

In the vast majority of Luxembourg municipalities, yes. ITE changes the external appearance of the building and generally requires planning permission or a prior declaration, depending on the municipality. Some communes have simplified the procedure for energy renovations. Your renovation contractor can take care of this as part of a turnkey project. Specific regulations apply in protected areas or historic districts.

Can I live in my home during the ITE work?

Yes, that's one of the great advantages of ITE over internal insulation. The work is carried out entirely from the outside of the building. You can stay at home throughout the work. The only constraints are site noise (drilling for dowels, masonry equipment) during working hours, and the presence of scaffolding, which can temporarily limit the light in some rooms.

Should the windows be replaced at the same time as the ITE?

This is not compulsory, but it is strongly recommended. If you keep your old windows when installing an ETI, thermal bridges will remain in the transoms. Removing them without touching the windows requires the creation of specific insulating panels, which is complex. Replacing triple-glazed windows at the same time as ITE is also more economical: the scaffolding is shared, and you avoid having to mobilise the site a second time.

What thickness of insulation should I aim for with the Klimabonus?

To qualify for Klimabonus Level I, your ITE must achieve a minimum thermal resistance of R ≥ 3.7 m²-K/W. In practice: 14 to 16 cm of rock wool, or 18 to 22 cm of wood fibre. For level II (higher subsidy), aim for R ≥ 5 m²-K/W, i.e. 18-20 cm for mineral insulation. Your certified Klima-Agence energy advisor will tell you the thickness required for your specific home.

How long does an ITE project last?

For a detached house, an ITE project takes between 3 and 8 weeks, depending on the surface area, the technique chosen, the architectural complexity and the weather conditions. The preparatory phase (energy audit, Klimabonus agreement in principle, building permit) can take a further 4 to 8 weeks in advance. Taking all these steps into account, you should allow 3 to 6 months between the decision to renovate and completion of the work.

How do I choose a craftsman to carry out ITE in Luxembourg?

To qualify for the Klimabonus, the work must be carried out by an approved company registered in Luxembourg (Chambre des Métiers + RCS). Choose craftsmen who are certified «Nohalteg an d'Zukunft +» (a label awarded by the Chambre des Métiers in partnership with Klima-Agence), who have specific training in energy renovation and who can submit the Klimabonus application directly.
