How much does an emergency heating call-out cost?
An emergency call-out costs the increased hourly rate plus travel, with parts on top: a job lasting an hour and a half on a Saturday comes to about €220 to €310 excluding VAT before parts. On a weekday, the same job costs about €175 to €290 excluding VAT.
Three reflexes keep the bill down: check the circuit pressure and the circuit breaker before calling, ask for the travel charge and hourly rate on the phone, and get a price before any major part is replaced. A maintenance contract usually gives priority service and often includes travel.
Mandatory inspection: what the law requires
In Luxembourg, annual servicing is not required by law, but periodic inspection is: every 4 years for a gas boiler, every 2 years for an oil or wood boiler (4 years with an electronic monitoring system). Which VAT rate on a heating engineer’s invoice?
A heating engineer’s invoice normally carries 17% VAT. The 3% rate applies to heating work carried out by a company in a main residence at least 10 years old, up to a benefit of €50,000 per home.
In practice, servicing and small repairs stay at 17%: direct application of the 3% rate requires a quote of at least €3,000 excluding VAT and AED approval obtained before the works, countersigned by the client.
